Firstly an apology - myself and Lisa moved house two days before Nowzad and Tali were due to come out of quarantine (to stop them going through that hassle), but our broadband details never moved with us.....so we have been without the Internet for over two weeks. Great actually not checking email every day but really bad for our supporters as we couldn't let any one know how Nowzad and Tali enjoyed their first days of real freedom. Over 100 emails to read tonight - can't wait!
I first found Nowzad back in October 06 - how long ago is that? It feels like a lifetime. "Nowzad" is Iranian for newborn, which is so apt. Nowzad and the Nowzad Dogs story have changed my life beyond all recognition and I definitely know it has changed Nowzad and Tali's! Along the road of the last 14 months we have met so many fantastic people who all share the same the passion to help the less fortunate dogs and animals from the sometimes forgotten places of the world. From the bottom of my heart I need to thank you all and look forward to a lifetime of new friendships. |

Myself and Lisa were slightly apprehensive driving to the quarantine to collect Nowzad and Tali, we knew they had not been house trained, walked on a lead and the main fact than Nowzad didn't really do people. We were king of wondering how it was all going to pan out? We could only guess what would happen next.
The girls at the quarantine, led by Rebecca, have done a fantastic job with the two of them, Nowzad looked forward to them coming into his run to feed him and make a fuss of him. Tali was just completely bonkers - running around her run at mach 3 until she finally jumped on your lap and lapped up the attention until you had to leave.

Nowzad seemed as excited as ever to see us and took it all in his stride as we fitted his harness for the first time. Holding on to him though as he went for his first walk in over 14 months was a job but well worth the strained muscles to let him experience what most UK dogs take for granted everyday. He didn't want to get in the van for the long journey back to our house as the only other time I put him in a van he went on the nightmare journey from Nowzad to freedom. (yet now he knows we are going for a walk he runs into the van and gets himself into the crate for the journey to the beach!). Tali just ran round on her lead like a dog possessed when Lisa led her out of her run at the quarantine. But the new smells as she left the quarantine seemed to slow her down! Getting back to our new house and the greeting from our two hounds "Phys" and "Beamer" went really well. A few growls and barks but nothing serious. Our first outing was to the beach and it went really well - although neither of them wanted to get their feet wet! Going for a dip in the sea with our two was not going to be on the cards! |

One week later and both are so well behaved it is slightly unbelievable. Tali is so good on a lead you would have thought that she had been in the UK all her life, Nowzad lives outside as he still wants to wee on absolutely everything but as we go for more and more walks he is slowly getting more used to other people and dogs. I think he likes his space but happily comes out to run around the garden for his wee breaks! To think they have both come from one of the most remote and currently dangerous places in the world, where even human life is so cheap, where all dogs have to hunt for minute scraps to stay alive and face the daily abuse of maybe being used for dog fighting or puppy breeding and even dodging military bombs, but are now living a safe and happy existence in the UK, is just mad if you really think about it. BUT it is all thanks to you guys - our supporters. Without you we couldn't have achieved what we have. Thank you everybody. I will keep you all updated on Nowzad and Tali as they experience a new beginning. To all our supporters have a great New Year - all the best for 2008 and let's hope that we can get little "Helmand" out of harms way. |
