Helmand arrives in the UK!

24th Jan 08

Nowzad - the original Nowzad Dog

What can I say - "Helmand" has finally made it - seeing him for the first time in nearly a year was unbelievable. He is in a lot better condition than Nowzad and Tali were when they arrived. He is a scared little chap but that is to be expected - he has had a weird start to life!

He will have to go through the 6 months of quarantine and then we already have a loving home for him to go to.

Thank you everybody - I feel like the Nowzad Dogs charity is more of a group of friends than an everyday charity and because of that we can only achieve more. I am certainly determined to see more success like this.

I am having a beer to celebrate - cheers everyone!

PS Lots of people ask me what it was really like in Helmand Province, well, I have watched lots of so called reporters not really explaining what it is like to serve in Afghan  - but I have just watched "Ross Kemp" in Afghanistan, (always thought he was rubbish until he did "Gangs") , anyway, he is telling it as it is and that is as close to the real thing as you will see. Keep watching as I think they go to the town of Nowzad. Ross has gone up in my book, about time everybody knew the real Afghanistan. (And Ross if you are reading this any chance you would like to meet Nowzad?)

Now that Helmand is back it does not mean we stop - this email came in from Afghan about the same time as Helmand arrived in the UK

"At the moment, we are trying to figure out how we can provide emergency assistance to purchase and distribute animal feed to tens of thousands of livestock keepers who are suffering the worst winter for more than 20 years - More than 3 metres of snow in places where there was normally only a sprinkle every winter. Thousands of animals have died and more than 200 people have died of starvation and cold. Its been -25 at night for the last few nights and about -10 by day in Kabul - So a lot of stray dogs are also dying of cold on the streets of Kabul at the moment"

You know we are not walking away....
